Joe’s American Bar and Grill

l1.jpg

It’s always fun to take your pup out to dinner.  Some of the Restaurants I have posted have been a little on the pricey side.  And in today’s economy, some of us don’t have the luxury of going out to eat as much as we would like.  But if you are looking for good food for a good price than Joe’s American Bar and Grill is a good spot to hit.

I know there are several Joe’s American Bar and Grilles around but on a nice summer day, I suggest to hit the one in the North End.  You get the experience of dining out in the North End without the North End prices.  The best part about sitting out on the patio is that it is right on the water.  You will enjoy watching the sailboats go by while your pup gets to enjoy a night out with you and a cool ocean breeze.  I would suggest getting the fried calamari for an appetizer.  I absolutely loved it, as did my roommates. And for dinner i went with the steak tip salad, which I would also recommend.  You will find yourself staying there much longer than your meal will last just to take in the waterfront.  Add a couple of drinks and you will want to stay all night.

GoDogGo!

img_0185.jpg   Recently, a client of mine purchased the GoDogGo, an automatic fetching machine for her high energized pup.  At first sight, I couldn’t help but laugh a little bit.  However, if you were around this little guy for about 15 minutes, you would understand why they absolutely needed it.  We got to try it out at the park and it does launch tennis balls pretty far! Riley didn’t really like the sound of the machine as it was on but its something she would be able to get used to.  The trick is to train your pup to put the ball back into the bucket to launch it again.  Or if your dog doesn’t seem to pick up on that, you can put 20 tennis balls at a time in the bucket and it will launch them every 7 to 15 seconds.  Now, I have always been a fan of the Chuckit myself.  I like to be apart of the fun when playing with Riley.  But, if you have a dog that is just go go go!  And you don’t have the energy to keep up, then the GoDogGo is pretty cool.

Zen Dog Training

201943_f260.jpg

In my mind, Riley is perfect.  She gets along great with other dogs, listens very well and she does what shes told.  However, that all happened by accident.  I just happened to adopt a dog that was very easy to deal with and train.  Some people wish they could say the same.  If you are looking for a good place to learn how to train your pup then Zen Dog Training is the place to go.  The people there are amazing and they absolutely love what they do.  If you are looking for in-home training or group classes they have both. What I really love about Zen Dog is that they don’t just help train your pup but they train you as well.  They way dogs learn how to behave is by shes or hers owner constantly reinforcing training techniques over and over again.  Zen Dog teaches you everything you need to know so that you can reinforce those techniques in your own home.  They use fun and modern training techniques so you and your pup wont just be learning, but you will be having a great time doing it too.  It is a great way to get to know your dog better and it will bring the two of you closer together.

Cause To Paws

l2.jpg I’m definitely one of those owners that spoils their pup.  Whenever I find a shop that sales unique toys or treats, you can bet that I will be there.  Cause to Paws has so many different goodies to choose from, its impossible to pick out just a couple things.  The store was a little cluttered because they have everything you can imagine.  They even had sweaters that were big enough to fit Riley, who is 60+ pounds.  Even though I’m not big on sweaters for her, its nice that they provide clothing for large dogs.  I did think that their toys were overpriced and the owners dog that is free to stroll around the store can be a little nasty to other dogs.  However, that dog weighs less than Riley’s head so I wasn’t too nervous about it.  But if I was them I would want my pup to be a little better around dogs, it can be bad for business to have a dog that is aggressive towards dogs that are coming in the store.  I probably wont be visiting this store very often because of its prices, but if you don’t mind spending some money on your pup than this store is for you.  If not, I would suggest finding a different pet store.

    Arnold Arboretum

    l1.jpg

Since the weather hasn’t been that great, it has been a while since Riley and I have checked out any new hiking spots.   However, we can only stay in the house for so long.  We decided to check out Arnold Arboretum located in Jamaica Plain.  It was muddy and wet, which if you ask Riley are perfect hiking conditions.  I prefer drying conditions, but I will never say no to a hike.  Putting the mud aside, this place was absolutely beautiful.  There are paved paths to walk along if you don’t feel like getting your sneakers super dirty.  Since it is the winter, Riley and I didn’t have the privilege of seeing all the different flowers that we heard so much about.  What is also very cool about Arnold Arboretum are the different species of trees from around the world that are all over the grounds.  Riley and I can’t wait for spring to roll around so we can see how amazing the this place really is.

    Middlesex Fells Reservation

    spot_pond.JPG

This weekend Riley and I were feeling adventurous, so we decided to check out Middlesex Fells Reservation.  My roommate was the one that introduced us to this reservation and luckily she came with us on our visit.  This reservation is HUGE, so if you do decide to check it out, I would recommend going with someone that is familiar with the area or do a little research about the trails before going or else you could get lost.  Trail running isn’t something we do very often, however now we might start making it a weekly routine. Riley absolutely loved the Fells.  It was beautiful and best of all it was packed with other people and their dogs.  I did hear there was a section of the reservation that had an off-leash park, but we were so tired after our run that we never made it there.  While you and your pup are one the trails, you must keep them leashed.  If a ranger catches your pup off his or her leash, they will slap you with a hundred dollar fine.  You will also find many people riding their bikes along the trails.  I saw a couple people riding their bikes with their pups on their leashing running along side them! I was pretty impressed! Riley and I haven’t mastered that yet.  Parking can be a hassle but it is worth the wait.  Riley and I will be back this weekend.

    Brookline Avenue Playground

    otisandbuddy.jpg

I love nothing better than to let Riley run free with lots of playmates.  At Brookline Avenue Playground she can do just that in a large fenced in park.  There is nothing super special about the park, only that it has four acres for your pup to run around till their furry legs can’t move any longer.  There were so many dogs visiting the park when Riley and I arrived, that by the end of our visit, Riley’s tongue was hanging so far out of her mouth I wasn’t sure it was every going to go back in!  To me that is the ultimate sight of a happy pup!  This isn’t strictly a dog park.  Riley and I watched a soccer game that was going on inside the park, we needed a break so Riley could catch her breath and have some much needed water.  Another thing I really liked about the park was that it was very well maintained.  I’m sure we wont see much more of the grass when winter is right around the corner.  However, I’m sure Riley will like the park that much more once it’s filled with snow.  We will definitely be visiting this park again.

    Pet Spa

    dsc00006-leveled.jpgdsc00011.jpg

Feel like pampering your pup? Sometimes even your pup would enjoy a day at the Spa!  I have never really thought about taking Riley to a spa since she has such short hair, not enough to cut.  So instead I  tagged along with a friend that brought her very fluffy pooch there for a trim.  The employees were extremely friendly and I really liked that they didn’t crate the dogs while they wait to get a hair cut.  The dogs get to socialize and play with each other pups until it is their time for a cut.  Not only is it just a spa but they have a pet Boutique as well.  They have many stylish leashes and collars to choose from along with a lot of toys, bags and water bowls.  They also sell natural and organic treats such as whoopie pies, peanut butter bars, carob drizzled bones, banana biscotti’s and cakes for those special occasions.  This establishment is super cute, very colorful and relaxing inside and most important, very clean.  The only downfall of the place is where it is located.  Very busy street with lot of construction.  Hopefully the construction will be over sometime soon.

Running the Pack is absolutely wonderful.  When I first got my puppy, Jill walked me through what the best walking schedule would best, as well as passed along some advice about how to make sure the walks that he was on with me were encouraging him to be the best little doggy-citizen he could be….I love how committed and caring Jill and all her staff are.
